How NMB is responding to 2025's supply chain conundrums

We’re already nearing the halfway mark of 2025, and we’ve seen some significant shifts in the global supply chain landscape. Rising tariffs, disruptions in chemical trade routes, and more stringent hazmat and export regulations have created added pressure for parcel and LTL shippers—driving the need for enhanced D365 supply chain capabilities to effectively adapt and stay compliant.

The re-escalation of the U.S.-China trade war, as an example, as well as new tariffs imposed by the U.S. on imports from Canada, Mexico, and the EU have disrupted established chemical shipping lanes. Consequently, increased regulatory scrutiny—especially in the EU and North America—has introduced new documentation and packaging standards for hazardous goods. Supply chains that fail to automate compliance processes are facing shipment rejections, fines, or delays at customs checkpoints.

In keeping with NMB’s commitment to empowering our customers, our latest Gateway for Parcel release addresses many of these challenges—introducing several new features designed to help mitigate complexities, while also building upon our preexisting list of core shipping features.

This release introduces several high-impact features—including UPS address classification and validation, export license management, manual shipping, and hazmat and export documentation enhancements—each tailored to proactively address parcel and LTL shipping challenges within the D365 ecosystem.

Flexibility delivered

Having a configurable D365 parcel shipping solution empowers businesses to ship more efficiently by adapting to their unique operational needs, carrier preferences, and compliance requirements. Instead of relying on rigid, one-size-fits-all workflows, Gateway for Parcel’s latest Parcel parameter updates enable our customers to tailor shipping rules, documentation, and exception handling to match their specific products, regions, and customer expectations.

Commercial invoice settings

In version 10.0.41.65.10000, we’ve added several new Commercial invoice parameters, enabling users to set default ‘sold by’ and ‘tax ID’ fields, as well as define data mapping logic for populating contact information. Users can now select between various commercial invoice layout options, allowing users to group goods information by customer PO.

UPS address classification

NMB Gateway for Parcel is now integrated with UPS’ address validation API functionality, a service that checks and verifies the accuracy of shipping addresses before a package is sent. This helps ensure that deliveries are made efficiently and to the correct location, reducing the risk of delays, returns, or additional fees. NMB Gateway for Parcel allows you to perform classification checks on US-based addresses at the customer address, Sales order, and batch levels within D365—classifying addresses as either Residential or Commercial.

Export license management

As a major enhancement to managing export compliance thresholds, we’ve released a prototype within the Gateway for Parcel module, enabling users to create and manage export license records (including internal temporary/draft licenses). It allows shippers to enter critical item reference information, including effective dates, ACN numbers, and SNAP-R Reference codes. Users can also differentiate between intermediate consignee and end customer information, a core requirement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

These new pages seamlessly integrate within D365 Sales order workflows, which means active export licenses can quickly be applied to Sales order items based on the item, customer, or address record before completing the packing and shipping process.

Manual shipping

When automated processes break down—due to carrier outages or special handling needs—manual shipping workflows allow teams to intervene and ensure continuity without compromising compliance or delivery accuracy.

Gateway for Parcel’s latest manual shipping feature allows users to create and send shipments without generating Sales orders within D365, while maintaining the necessary details such as customer account information, shipping addresses, package details, and tracking information. This means users can create and send orders to existing customers that already have accounts created within D365, or they can configure one-time customers for single-use shipping.

Flagging Sales order returns

To further enhance the Sales order entry process, we’ve extended return label functionality within the Packing Workbench, enabling Sales representatives to flag customer orders that require return labels for specific shipments at the Sales order header level—eliminating the need to pass additional internal notes to packers signalling return label needs.

Other notable enhancements:

  • Added new LTL accessorials including Airport delivery, Hold at dock, Self storage delivery, Pallet jack furnished delivery, and more

  • New ‘remaining to pack’ filter toggle added to the Packing Workbench WHS

  • Carton label design and printing enhancements, including ZPL to PNG conversion

  • New DHL-specific packing instruction options for HazMat shipments

  • CIRS invoice import batch improvements

  • V3 and V4 data entity extensions for Sales order headers

These enhancements not only reduce risk and improve compliance but also streamline operations, minimize delays, and ensure your shipments reach their destinations accurately and efficiently. As supply chains grow more complex, NMB Gateway continues to evolve, while continuing to work alongside our devoted customer base, helps us investigate new and innovative ways to help shippers ship smarter, faster.
